We inspire people to conquer challenges related to mobility and independence, through a nationwide network of volunteer chapters. Working in partnership with physical, occupational, and speech therapists; by providing Amtryke Adaptive Trykes, scholarships for therapists, and many forms of community service.

History

AMBUCS was formed in 1922 in Birmingham, Alabama by a group of 50 businessmen who had a passion for doing service projects in their community. Through the decades, it has grown to include over 160 chapters in 35 states. As it grew, it transitioned into a 501(c)(3) with a mission of Inspiring Mobility & Independence.

Although each chapter completed service projects for their communities, a unified project didn’t exist until the 1990s. A pediatric physical therapist in Texas, named Sue Haywood, had a problem and needed help to correct it. Sue owned an adapted tricycle and loaned it to children on her caseload for one week at a time. In this short amount of time, she saw significant gains in strength, muscle tone, and self-confidence. Adapted tricycles were expensive, however, so most families were not able to purchase them. She presented her idea to the local AMBUCS chapter, and members quickly volunteered their space, talents, and time to build additional bikes. In 1995, they presented their project at the National Convention, and from there the Amtryke came to be what it is today, a unified project benefiting children and veterans.

The Las Vegas AMBUCS was formed in 2015. We are a completely volunteer group dedicated to providing Amtryke therapeutic tricycles to children who are unable to ride a traditional bike. To date, we have provided nearly 187 Amtrykes to children in our community, and an additional 6 to clinics and rehabilitation centers that provide services to children with special needs.

What We DO

The Las Vegas AMBUCS is dedicated to Inspiring Mobility & Independence by providing Amtryke therapeutic tricycles to children who are unable to ride a traditional bike. These trykes are custom-built to harness each child’s limitations and support their strengths so that every child can experience the freedom of riding a bike. There are over 15 models of Amtrykes and countless adaptations, so the customization is limitless.
